Read the ten working chapters in order.
Joe’s original contributions, placement notes, writing workflow, and companion-course planning.
Recorded: October 9, 2026 (America/Detroit)
Source: Joe's initial book-planning conversation
Status: Working notes; the proposed structure below is provisional.
The quotations in this section preserve Joe's wording, including conversational spelling and repeated words. Summaries outside the quotations are identified separately.
I want to create a book and online course for my uglysob.com domain. something you can help me with?
Joe created the book/ folder to keep track of the work. His latest direction makes the book the immediate focus.
The book is based around my definition of business: knowing who you need, who you don't, and who you can go around.
This is the central premise. Preserve the three ideas in Joe's order:
Ugly Side of Business, though some will think Ugly Son of a Bitch.
The intended meaning of Ugly SOB is Ugly Side of Business. Joe acknowledges Ugly Son of a Bitch as a possible second reading. He has not established a final subtitle or cover treatment.
Anyone trying to get ahead, and not just business.
The book's scope extends beyond commercial business. A narrower primary audience has not been selected.
Think of their relationships differently, realize they're not alone if they think this way
Joe identifies two intended effects:
Realizing who is helping me and who is not, who will and who wont.
Editorial reading: This includes both help someone gives now and help someone may or may not give in the future. The criteria Joe uses to make that judgment remain to be developed.
Asked how he makes that judgment, Joe said:
See the the other person's point of view.
Understanding the other person's point of view is part of Joe's approach to judging who will help. He has not yet supplied a personal example or a detailed method.
Also understand that they think the say way.
Read in context as "the same way." Joe's point includes recognizing that the other person is making assessments too.
Editorial reading: The definition can be considered from both sides of a relationship. While a reader considers who they need, who they don't, and who they can go around, the other person may be considering those same questions. This is an interpretation to develop in the writing, rather than a claim about every person's motives.
At this point, I think it's best to start working on the book. I think that will answer your questions.
Joe authorized saving these notes in the book folder. Continue developing the ideas through the book and his feedback. When clarification is needed, retain his preference for one question at a time.
so how we're going to write this is I'm going to bring up topics and you figure out here to put them. as we work, I'll ask you about what parts we need to fill in. Oh, some of the content will be stories. At that moment, you'll help me add it to the book.
Joe will bring material in the order it occurs to him. Some material will be stories. Codex is responsible for suggesting where each piece belongs and helping develop it with him. Joe will ask about gaps as the book develops.
you should only complete content when I use the "Complete:" command.
Only Joe's use of Complete: as a command authorizes completing book content. The workflow below incorporates this rule.
When I use the "Add:" command, I want you to add that to the content.
Add: authorizes adding Joe's supplied material to the appropriate chapter as working manuscript content. It does not mark the material complete or replace the Complete: command.

people will most often think about what's in it for them. it's not everyone. some people love to learn new things, love to just help others. in those cases, you'll find it hard to their place. those with this trait and ambition are even more extremely rare. when you find them, become a teacher and give them responsibilities as they grow.
Joe clarified the unclear phrase:
I mean you'll find it hard to figure out their place.

Leave gaps visible for further development.Complete:, turn the material covered by that command into a finished passage, section, or chapter and integrate it into the appropriate manuscript file.Complete:Complete: is Joe's explicit completion command for this book. Apply it to the topic, story, passage, section, or chapter identified in the command or clearly established by the immediate discussion.Task: request to add notes, expand an outline, organize files, or update progress authorizes that requested work; it does not by itself authorize completing book content.Complete: while discussing the workflow is not an instruction to complete content. This section is an interpretation of the conversation, not finished manuscript copy or additional statements from Joe.
The book begins with Joe's definition of business and applies it to relationships in a broader effort to get ahead in life. It asks readers to recognize who helps them, who does not, and what they can expect from others. Understanding the other person's point of view is central to that assessment. The reader also needs to recognize that the other person is making assessments of their own.
The intended reader response combines a changed perspective with recognition: someone else has put words to thoughts they have had about their relationships.
The initial three-part proposal below is retained as planning history. On October 9, 2026, Joe asked to save the ten-chapter proposal in Chapter outline, which is now the working outline. Chapter titles can evolve as the writing develops.
Understanding the other person's point of view and recognizing their own assessments could run through all three parts. The structure can change as the writing develops.
These are writing topics to revisit as needed, rather than a questionnaire Joe must complete before the book can begin.
Joe wants an online course associated with the book and uglysob.com. No course curriculum or delivery platform has been selected.
The assistant previously proposed using the book's ideas as the basis for lessons and exercises that help readers apply them to their own relationships. Keep that as a possible direction while the book develops.
