Ugly SOB · Behind the book

Project guide

The book’s premise, audience, authoring files, and writing workflow.

  • StatusBook planning and working material

Author: Joe Bannon
Associated domain: uglysob.com
Started: October 9, 2026

This folder holds the working material for Joe's book and eventual companion online course. The book is the current focus.

Starting premise

Joe's definition of business:

knowing who you need, who you don't, and who you can go around.

The intended audience is anyone trying to get ahead, including outside business. Joe wants readers to think about their relationships differently and realize they are not alone in thinking this way.

Working files

  • Author notes — Joe's statements from the initial conversation, editorial interpretations, a provisional structure, and material still to develop.
  • Chapter outline — the ten working chapters, their purposes, suggested sections, example prompts, reader takeaways, and the thread connecting them.
  • Progress — current word counts, estimated page counts, and the counting method.
  • Chapters — one numbered Markdown file per chapter, holding the reader-facing manuscript text.

Manuscript chapters

Each chapter has one draft file. Develop the manuscript from material Joe supplies, adding working content with Add: and completing specified content with Complete:. Assemble the files in numbered order for a complete manuscript; keep chapter plans and editorial prompts in the outline.

  1. The Ugly Side of Business
  2. The Other Person's Point of View
  3. They're Thinking the Same Way
  4. Knowing Who You Need
  5. Who Can Help, and Who Will
  6. Knowing Who You Don't
  7. When to Stop Waiting
  8. Knowing Who You Can Go Around
  9. Finding Another Way
  10. Seeing Your Relationships Clearly

How to continue

  • Develop the book through writing and Joe's feedback. Joe prefers that the writing help answer the remaining questions.
  • When a question is needed, ask one at a time.
  • Preserve Joe's definition and the order of its three ideas.
  • Keep Joe's statements distinct from editorial interpretations and proposed material.
  • Build personal stories from material Joe provides. Personal experiences and quotations attributed to Joe must come from him.
  • Let the course develop from the book as its ideas become clearer. Its lessons, exercises, format, and delivery remain to be decided.
  • Follow the Writing workflow: Joe brings topics and stories in any order; Codex suggests placement and helps develop the material. Review gaps when Joe asks and keep follow-up questions one at a time.
  • Complete book content only when Joe issues Complete: as a command. For this book, that command authorizes completing and saving the identified material. Keep work provisional until then. Requests to update notes or outlines, and mentions of the command while discussing the workflow, do not authorize content completion.
  • Add: authorizes inserting Joe's supplied material into the appropriate chapter as working content. Show the passage and its placement, and update chapter and manuscript word and estimated page counts. Adding material does not mark it complete.

Word and page count reporting

  • Include the current manuscript word count and estimated page count in every book progress report, as Joe requested on October 9, 2026.
  • When drafting or revising a chapter, also report that chapter's word count and estimated page count.
  • Count reader-facing manuscript text, including chapter titles and section headings. Keep outlines, author notes, example prompts, editorial instructions, course material, and project-management files outside the manuscript total.
  • Report planning counts separately when the work concerns the outline or notes.
  • Count readable words with Markdown formatting, list numbering, and link destinations excluded. Words with an internal apostrophe or hyphen count as one word.
  • Until a book layout is chosen, estimate pages at 250 words per page, rounding up to a whole page. Zero words equals zero pages. Label these as estimates; actual page counts will come from the laid-out manuscript.
  • Update Progress whenever authorized work changes the counted material.

Website workspace

The public UglySOB homepage links to all ten chapters in order. Each chapter has its own department at /chapter-1 through /chapter-10. The project guide, progress, outline, and author notes are public Main pages at /main/project-guide, /main/progress, /main/outline, and /main/author-notes. These canonical pages are included in the source sitemap and page directory. The former /hidden workspace is retired.

The Markdown files in book/ remain the source of truth. Each chapter’s website copy lives in its own src/realms/uglysob/departments/chapter-N/sections/overview.js file; supporting material lives under departments/main/sections/. When authorized additions or revisions change the book material or its counts, update the corresponding website text and progress together. Publishing a working draft does not complete it; the Complete: rule still applies.

Later folders

Add these as material is ready for them:

  • source-material/ — Joe's stories, interviews, and reference material.
  • course/ — companion course lessons and supporting material.
  • outputs/ — assembled drafts, PDFs, and publishing files generated from the manuscript chapters.
